A Historic Anniversary for Little Italy – The 100th!
Madonna della Difesa
This year, Little Italy celebrates its one hundred years! The first stone of Our-Lady-of-Defense Church, known as Madonna della Difesa, was laid marking the birth of the Montreal’s Little Italy. Built by Italian immigrants, this church became the focal point of Montreal’s Italian-Canadian community and an iconic symbol of Montreal’s Little Italy. Little Italy’s sense of community was not built in one day; it was built through growing proximity between people, through habits created together and, especially, through the development of a strong sense of belonging to the neighborhood.
The Jean-Talon market is another emblem of this historic district. Indeed, shortly after the establishment of the Madonna della Difesa, the market took a permanent place in the neighborhood and anchored the habits of Italo-Montrealers. With the market, the tradition of homemade food has been preserved through generations. With the market, the tradition of homemade food has been preserved through generations.
After one hundred years of existence, we can see that the first Italian immigrants’ dream is still alive: Little Italy has become a tight-knit community where life is good.
